Several new energy projects are to be implemented in Russia shortly under the Kyoto protocol. One of the new generating units is to be sited at the Shatura  power station outside of Moscow, and will help  to reduce the  amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere by more than a million tons.

The result will be achieved within two years by the installation of a 400 megawatt capacity thermal gas device. Earnings from the reduction of carbon dioxide will be  spent to  enhance the effectiveness of  energy saving efforts, stressed Denis Litoshik, an official of the company responsible for power generation at Shatura  station.
Equipment that has no equal in Russia, has been installed at the Shatura station - increasing the efficiency level of the station  almost two fold, compared to the old equipment. In addition, the new equipment is environmentally friendly, said Litoshik.
The money spent on upgrading has been well spent, not only from the point of view of ecology, but also from the economic point of view, declared Alexei Kokorin, head of the “Klimat” company.
Pure commercial considerations should suggest the use of cheaper equipment, but the new and more expensive equipment takes care of the ecology and releases lesser amount of greenhouse gas into the  atmosphere, argues Kokorin.
We are talking about one station only. It  does not reduce the amount of energy and heat; it reduces the fuel requirement for the same amount of aggregate output. The more economic and more effective burning of fuel will reduce the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere, he declared. The new thermal gas device at Shatura station is one of three projects designed to improve the overall ecological situation, E.ON Company is among the major shareholders in the project.
The upgrading of the Russian energy sector is going full speed ahead; energy saving technology is being introduced in hydro and thermal power stations, new generating units of world standard are being constructed.
All these development will enable Russia to take active part in the implementation of the Kyoto protocol programme.
