MANILA, Philippines - The Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) has signed an agreement with a Korean agency to work jointly in research to mitigate the impact of global warming.

SEARCA director Gil Saguiguit said the Korea Adaptation Center for Climate Change (KACCC) signed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen the campaign and collaborate with regional experts in forging a common front to overcome the disastrous effects of climatic aberrations like El Niño and La Niña.

Apart from Dr. Gil C. Saguiguit, Jr., KACC director Dr.Young Han Kwon signed the agreement on behalf of Seoul.

The witnesses were Ms. Susan V. Fernandez, head of SEARCA's Management Services Unit, and Dr. Huicheul Jung, KACCC Research Fellow.

Saguiguit said the five-year agreement was signed on December 14 at the SEARCA office in Los Baños, Laguna.

SEARCA is the center for agriculture of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO), of which the Philippines is a charter member.

It is mandated to address the agricultural and rural development needs of Southeast Asian countries by building capacities of institutions through its core programs on graduate scholarship, research and development, and knowledge management.

KACCC was established by the Korean Ministry of Environment at the Korea Environment Institute to enhance its ability to develop climate change adaptation strategies.

SEARCA and KACCC have agreed to collaborate in the conduct of research studies on environmental and natural resource management through shared use of existing resources, including knowledge products, and generation of additional resources.

KACCC has over 50 research fellows whose interdisciplinary research capabilities are enhanced by its partnerships with private and government research institutions and universities.
